ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Not Assimilated by Contemplation: A Symposium on the Argentine Avant-Garde of the 1960s is a two-day symposium co-organized by ISLAA and Dia Art Foundation.
Through lectures, panels, conversations, screenings, and archival encounters, the symposium examines the groundbreaking work and international networks of the generation of Argentine artists who emerged in Buenos Aires during the postwar period.
The establishment of the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella in 1958 was foundational to the development of cultural production in Argentina. In subsequent years, it became a central site for circulating new media and Pop art in Latin America, supporting radical experimentation and launching numerous artists' careers.
The symposium brings together artists, curators, and scholars to consider the ideas, relationships, and institutional networks that shaped this extraordinary period. It also examines the international circulation of Argentine experimental art and its lasting influence on subsequent generations of artists in Latin America and beyond.
The symposium is presented in conjunction with David Lamelas: The Machine, on view at Dia Chelsea, and The New York Graphic Workshop: Towards Total Art, opening at ISLAA on September 26, 2026.
