Please join us for an in-person event exploring curatorial approaches to fiber-based art, organized in conjunction with the exhibition Threads to the South at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA). This event will feature presentations by art historians and curators Julia Bryan-Wilson and Lynne Cooke, and a conversation moderated by Anna Burckhardt Pérez, curator of Threads to the South. It will be followed by a reception and an opportunity to view the exhibition at ISLAA.
In recent years, art institutions worldwide have developed ambitious exhibitions that recognize and reexamine the vast breadth of textile practices throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, a form that has traditionally been marginalized in art historical narratives. This program will investigate this phenomenon by gathering art historians and curators to reflect on the diversity of curatorial strategies and frameworks adopted by these exhibitions, including Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2024), and Threads to the South at ISLAA, New York (2024).
The event will take place at ISLAA, located at 142 Franklin Street in Tribeca. Seating is limited, and attendees are encouraged to register in advance. The program will be held in English, and a recording will be made available online after its conclusion.
