The ISLAA Writer in Residence program offers scholars the opportunity to conduct research over the course of four to five weeks, exploring rare books and newly processed primary sources from our Library and Archives.  

We invite applications from students, faculty, and independent scholars through our open calls for proposals.

The ISLAA Research Grant aims to expand access to research funding by supporting emerging scholars. Grantees receive funding to conduct novel investigations into themes, geographies, and chronologies of modern and contemporary art and culture from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. 

During our open call for proposals, we invite MA and PhD students enrolled in graduate university programs worldwide to apply.

The ISLAA Graphic Design Residency invites one practitioner to develop their practice  and engage with our Library and Archives over the course of one year, designing a series of booklets for our exhibition program.

Established in 2016, the Annual Symposium features graduate students, scholars, and artists, who present original research and discourse on Latin American and Latinx art and visual culture.

This international event is supported by ISLAA and organized by graduate students at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; the Graduate Center, City University of New York; and Columbia University.

This initiative supports graduate seminars on key figures and periods of Latin American art with a focus on living artists who participate in conversations with students or on historical figures represented in the ISLAA collection. Students collaborate to produce a public-facing exhibition that aims to expand art historical narratives and provide a platform for emerging curators.

The ISLAA Forum sponsors annual events for graduate students studying Latin American art at US universities. Participating universities create programming that facilitates networking and professional development, fostering connections and solidarity among universities and enhancing the distribution and accessibility of resources related to Latin American art.

Living Histories of Latin American Art

This program enables professional development and resource-sharing through annual events for art history graduate students at the University of Maryland, Temple University, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Latin American and Latinx Art and Visual Culture Dissertation Workshop

This program builds community and professional networks for graduate students. During two-day workshops, students focus on dissertation proposals or a single thesis chapter. Participants share public presentations on their projects and invited scholars from the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Latin American Visual Studies (CLAVIS) offer a public lecture or seminar.

Latin American and Latinx Art Pre-Dissertation Plataforma

This program supports the critical early phase of dissertation research for PhD students studying Latin American and Latinx art and visual culture at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. Participants receive travel funding to conduct research, present their findings in a collaborative workshop, and invite a guest scholar to offer a public lecture at CUNY.

Our longest-running collaboration includes multiple lecture series, conferences, and exhibitions under the leadership of Edward J. Sullivan.

Columbia University Department of Art History and Archeology

Since 2012, we have provided support to the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and Barnard College annually. Through this partnership, Professor Alexander Alberro produces a variety of programs, including the Columbia University — ISLAA Colloquium.

This fellowship partners with museums to create opportunities for emerging curators to organize exhibitions and programming on Latin American and Latinx art. 

ISLAA has offered Curatorial Fellowships at the New Museum since 2021. Since 2023, ISLAA has partnered with Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College to select candidates from their program. 

This collaboration presents ambitious projects from Latin American artists that span exhibitions, publications, and public programs.

The Jaime Davidovich Foundation (JDF) was established following the Argentine artist’s passing and has since operated as an independent foundation with support from ISLAA.

JDF honors the life, work, and inimitable spirit of artistic experimentation carried forth by Argentine-American artist Jaime Davidovich (1936–2016). Its mission is to promote public awareness of his diverse body of work by supporting exhibitions, publications, and scholarship to encourage a deeper understanding of his contributions to contemporary US, Latinx, and Latin American art as well as his global impact.

The first initiative was organized as part of a long term partnership between ISLAA and the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This collaboration centers on the digitization and annotation of key documents published by the Buenos Aires–based Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAYC).
